The plan goes sideways when some men come to the island looking for their cargo and the missing man.Īfter the lighthouse keepers deal with the crew members who come to the island looking for their missing man and the chest full of gold he traveled with, the tension in the movie increases manifold. They plan on how they each can get a share of the gold without getting caught. Donald and James are overwhelmed with curiosity the following day and eventually open the chest themselves. He discovers the hidden gold and immediately packs the trunk the way it was. We see Thomas secretly opening the chest in the middle of the night despite asking the others not to open it. The keepers are torn between keeping the chest locked as per protocol and opening it to find something valuable. This event makes them waver off their principal duties, and greed drives them to do ugly things. It reveals how their lives turn upside down when a mysterious wooden chest washes up on shore along with a presumably dead man. ‘The Vanishing’ unfolds the mystery of three lighthouse keepers – Thomas, James, and Donald, who disappear from the island without a trace. This makes the climax pose a big question – what really happened to Thomas, James, and Donald? Let’s find out. A person’s mental health can go awry in such circumstances. ‘The Vanishing’ charts the course a person can take when greed takes over and leaves all sense behind. It shows what the human mind is capable of when faced with deadly trauma and physical violence. Nevertheless, I had a good time with this movie and am happy with how fairly and not one-sided things are portrayed. The movie is a testament to human strength, both mental and physical. I wish they went that extra step to show how detrimental the outside influences can be on these situations. Even the main character does some bad things that are never addressed. I think The Covenant does a better job of holding all sides (including our own) accountable, whereas Kandahar shows sympathy without ever asking for accountability. Kandahar does a much better job of illustrating the complexity of the situation, how not everything is black and white, and how there are people within those communities trying to fight against what's wrong. And even worse, they were usually portrayed as gross and barbaric. I grew up watching action movies where brown skin = bad guy. Watching this movie, I couldn't help but notice how far we've come regarding Islamophobia in action movies. It does a good job of balancing many moving parts (different groups, races and motivations). There were scenes of suspense as well as slower character moments, but I was never bored. But I was still invested because of the story and characters. The action is only a small portion of this movie. But as I watched, I realized this is how it would look if I was in that situation, something I've never seen. I wondered why they didn't use some kind of lighting trick. There is an action scene at night which had me complaining at first because I couldn't see much. It has some cool action scenes that seem to emphasize realism. I enjoyed Kandahar and found it entertaining throughout. Fortunately, in this case both movies turned out great. I find it amusing to see the return of very similar movies released in the same year (think Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down). Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is about the same subject matter. Kandahar is the second action-drama about Afghanistan I've seen in the last month.
